EXTENDING THE CIRCLE OF SUPPORT

FAMILY SUPPORT GROUPS

These groups encourage ongoing family education and emotional support. Members share their own knowledge and experiences and learn new information pertinent to the health, mental health and developmental disabilities fields. Effective access and empowerment approaches are emphasized.

Funded by multiple sources, groups (English/Spanish) include Early Intervention for families with children with developmental disabilities ages 0-3, Circle of Family Support for families with children with disabilities ages over 3 years, and Coping with Autism and other related disabilities. Advocacy training and information group sessions are also provided.

PEER SUPPORT

Support groups for consumers with developmental disabilities and other special needs are provided in various locations. Group members are encouraged to share their feelings and discuss issues affecting their health, social, emotional and/or interpersonal growth. Members exercise personal empowerment and self advocacy and are encouraged to focus on issues such as health and consumer education, daily living skills, legal and political rights and responsibilities, access to health and community resources or other issues of interest or importance to the group members. Groups meet on a regular basis in Pico Rivera, Long Beach and East Los Angeles.

COMMUNITY INTEGRATION AND TRAINING (CIT)

This program is funded by the Eastern Regional Center. Community Integration Training (CIT) is designed to strengthen the capacity of individuals with developmental disabilities and caregivers to achieve greater access to community supportive services and recreational activities. Based on a consumer and family driven approach, the program utilizes a variety of educational workshops, peer support, group activities, and community based instruction. Training includes use of public transportation, money management, shopping, using computers, and accessing health and other human services.
